History & General Information
Anniston Army Depot was established in 1941. The depot was intended to be a military storehouse but quickly grew during World War II.
In 1990, the Depot was put on the National Priorities List (NPL) under the Superfund Program. Superfund is a federally financed program to clean up the soil and water in any given area due to contaminants. Because of the military activity at the site there were toxins in the ground including antimony and lead.
A majority of the Depot grounds are used for ammunition storage. The Southeastern Industrial Area (SIA) is used for running operations and features a vehicle test track. While the Depot's main purpose has been to store munitions, army vehicles and other industrial military equipment are repaired and tested on site daily.
Anniston Depot is one of only a handful of locations in the country where chemical weapons are stored prior to disposal. Rockets, bombs, land mines and projectiles containing mustard gas and VX nerve agents are stored at the facility. Additionally, the Anniston Army Depot is the only installation that is able to repair and update combat vehicles. ANAD personnel are deployed to various places around the world to repair damaged U.S. military vehicles remotely.
Anniston Army Depot is the Army's main location for assembly, maintenance and upgrading of wheeled Stryker vehicles. The Depot also has facilities that repair and upgrade weapons like the Beretta M9 and M16 Rifles. Weapons that are beyond repair are disposed of on site and sold (once they have been completely deactivated) as scrap metal. During the Iraq War, more than 1,000 armored vehicles arrived at the Depot for repairs and maintenance.
